Pressed Into Mud, Preserved For Twenty Thousand Years

They are not large footprints.

Most of them belong to people who would not have stood out in a modern crowd — adults of average build, children running alongside them, teenagers whose stride length falls somewhere between the two.

They pressed into wet mud on the shore of a lake that no longer exists, in a basin that is now one of the driest places in North America, at a moment in human prehistory that most scientists, until very recently, believed was simply too early for people to have been here at all.

The footprints at White Sands are real.

They are physical impressions left in ancient lakebed sediment that hardened over millennia and eventually eroded to the surface in the gypsum-rich terrain of southern New Mexico.

A person who knew what to look for, walking the right part of White Sands National Park at the right time of day when low-angle light throws surface texture into sharp relief, can look down and see the actual shape of a human foot from the distant past — heel, arch, toes, the slight lateral roll of a walking stride.

They were identified formally by researchers in 2009, studied for years, and then dated.

When the dating results came back, they did not suggest a modest revision to the existing timeline for human presence in North America.

They suggested a rewrite.

The footprints were approximately 21,000 to 23,000 years old.

If that number is correct — and subsequent independent research has provided substantial support for the general age range, while the specific figures continue to be refined — then people were walking beside Lake Otero in what is now New Mexico during the Last Glacial Maximum, the coldest and most glaciated phase of the most recent Ice Age.

They were here when the Laurentide Ice Sheet covered most of Canada and reached deep into the northern United States.

They were here at a time when the most widely taught model for the peopling of the Americas said that the migration from Asia into North America had not yet begun, or had barely started.

A single set of footprints in a dry New Mexico lake basin has become one of the most consequential pieces of evidence in one of the oldest and most contested debates in American science: who were the first people to reach the Western Hemisphere, how did they get here, and how long ago did they arrive?

The answer has been changing, decade by decade.

White Sands changed it again — and changed it in ways that are still being worked through by scientists, by legal scholars, and by Indigenous communities whose oral histories have always described a presence in the Americas that predates the timelines Western science has assigned them.
