The Beringian Standstill Hypothesis

The Bluefish Caves evidence does not exist in isolation.

It is one piece in a much larger scientific debate about the timing and mechanism of the initial peopling of the Americas, and it is particularly relevant to one of the most important and most debated models in that field: the Beringian standstill hypothesis.

The Beringian standstill hypothesis proposes that the ancestral Native American population — the group of people from northeastern Asia whose descendants would eventually populate both North and South America — spent an extended period of isolation in the Beringia region before dispersing into the ice-free parts of North America.

This period of isolation is proposed to have lasted roughly 10,000 to 15,000 years, with the population confined to Beringia by the ice sheets that blocked the routes into the interior of North America and by the cold conditions of the Last Glacial Maximum that limited dispersal to the south.
