The Loess That Buried the Evidence

The preservation of evidence at Bluefish Caves depends on a specific geological process that operated in the region during and after the Last Glacial Maximum: the deposition of loess.

Loess is fine-grained sediment — silt — that is transported and deposited by wind.

During the Last Glacial Maximum, the landscapes of Beringia were subject to strong, persistent winds that picked up fine sediment from exposed glacial outwash plains and transported it across the landscape.

Where the wind speed dropped — at obstacles like ridge lines, vegetation, or, crucially, at cave entrances — the loess was deposited, accumulating layer by layer over thousands of years.
