Additional ancient genomes from eastern Siberia and adjacent regions have been analyzed in subsequent years, contributing to a more complete picture of the population history of the region.

Some of these individuals show pure or largely pure East Asian ancestry; others show varying proportions of Ancient North Eurasian ancestry.

The geographic and temporal patterning of these different ancestral signals is helping researchers understand when and where the mixing occurred that eventually produced the founding population of the Americas.

The emerging picture is of a complex demographic landscape in Ice Age Asia — not a simple situation with one population in the east and another in the west, but a dynamic system in which populations with different genetic heritages were in contact, mixing, and moving through a landscape that was itself changing as the glacial period evolved and eventually ended.

The Mal’ta boy’s genome sits at one end of this complex story — the clearest, oldest, and most well-characterized representative of the Ancient North Eurasian genetic heritage.
