Working mammoth ivory with stone tools requires several stages.

The raw material must first be obtained — from a recently dead mammoth, or from older bones and tusks found in the landscape, or from stockpiles maintained by the community.

The selection of appropriate raw material for a specific project is itself a skilled judgment: the shape and size of the tusk section, the quality of the ivory, the absence of cracks or defects that might cause the piece to fail during working.

Once the appropriate section is selected, it must be reduced to a rough blank — cut or split to approximately the right size and general shape.
