The people of Mal’ta, as fully modern humans with fully modern cognitive capacities, spoke a language as rich and complex as any human language spoken today.

That language is gone.

No writing preserved it.

No linguistic descendant has preserved it.

The specific sounds, the specific grammatical structure, the specific words for mammoth and ivory and bead and death — all of it is as permanently lost as the faces of the people who spoke it.

The genetic data does not help here.
