The invention of writing was nineteen thousand years away.

The Roman Empire was more than twenty-three thousand years in the future.

Every single thing that we consider recorded human history — everything documented in any text, inscription, or administrative record anywhere on earth — fits inside the last five or six thousand years, and this burial predates that entire window by nearly twenty millennia.

The child’s bones went to a museum.

Decades passed.

The world of ancient DNA research was born and grew and improved and became capable of things that would have seemed extraordinary even to scientists working twenty years before they were possible.

And then a team of researchers extracted genetic material from the boy’s remains and read what his genome contained.

What they found was something that no one had predicted and that immediately forced a rethinking of one of the most debated questions in all of science: how, and from whom, did the Americas come to be inhabited by human beings?

The boy buried near Lake Baikal 24,000 years ago carried ancestry that later appeared, in substantial proportion, in the genomes of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas.

He never crossed into the Americas.

He died in Siberia as a toddler.

But his genome was a key — a key to a chapter of human history that had been invisible until the science to see it was finally developed.
