The Model That The Genome Disrupted

The prevailing model of Native American origins before the MA-1 publication was essentially an East Asian model.

This model had been built primarily from the study of modern Native American genetics — from mitochondrial DNA haplogroups, from Y-chromosome lineages, and from genome-wide analysis of modern populations.

The specific mitochondrial haplogroups found in Native American populations — designated A, B, C, D, and X — were all either found in East Asian populations or were closely related to East Asian lineages.

The overall pattern of genetic similarity placed Native Americans most closely within the broad family of East Asian populations.
