The Afontova Gora genome helped establish the temporal range and geographic extent of the Ancient North Eurasian population, showing that it persisted in Siberia for thousands of years after the time of MA-1.

Additional ancient genomes from sites across Siberia, eastern Asia, and adjacent regions have subsequently been analyzed, building a more detailed picture of the population genetic landscape of Ice Age and post-Ice-Age Asia.

This research has refined the models of how Ancient North Eurasian ancestry was distributed across the region, how it mixed with East Asian-ancestry populations, and when the key mixing events occurred.

The picture that emerges from this accumulation of data is of a complex, dynamic population landscape in Pleistocene and early post-glacial Asia.
