He was between three and four years old when he died; the depth of his comprehension of the community’s symbolic world would have been limited by his age.

But he lived within it.

He was surrounded by it.

The objects placed in his grave were made by people steeped in the same tradition that produced the figurines.

That continuity — between the figurine-making tradition and the burial-goods tradition — suggests a community with a coherent, sustained symbolic culture, not a random accumulation of practices.

The Mal’ta people were not just physically surviving the Last Glacial Maximum.

They were creating meaning in it.
