The largest and most spectacular of the surviving Pazyryk felts — preserved in the Hermitage Museum in St.

Petersburg from Rudenko’s excavations — is a hanging more than four meters long depicting a great goddess or earth mother figure, horse-mounted figures approaching her, and elaborate ornamental borders.

This object alone demonstrates the scale and sophistication of Pazyryk textile production.

The Ice Maiden’s burial included felt elements — the base of her headdress, the stockings she wore, the felt that formed part of her wrappings.

These objects, preserved by the same permafrost conditions that preserved her body, are evidence of the textile tradition that was central to Pazyryk material culture.
