We do not know whether she chose the life that her burial suggests, or whether she was born into it.

We do not know how her death was understood by the people who embalmed her and carried her in ceremony for months before placing her in the ground.

We do not know whether she is mourned today by anyone who understands herself as her descendant.

These questions — about her interior life, her relationships, her beliefs, her continuity into the present — are questions that no archaeology can answer.

They are questions about being human that the physical record, however extraordinary, cannot address.
