The food on the table — mutton and horsemeat — was nourishment for the journey, prepared in the belief that the dead would need to eat in whatever dimension came after this one.

The Pazyryk, like many ancient cultures, conceived of death not as an ending but as a transition, and they provisioned their dead for the transition accordingly.

The serving vessels are functional objects, but they are also status objects.
