The mechanisms of this movement — whether through direct trade, through intermediaries, through gift exchange between distant elites — are not fully reconstructed from the available evidence.

But the silk itself is physical proof that the exchange networks of the ancient Eurasian steppe were more extensive and more active than the conventional narrative of the Silk Road might suggest.
