The Steppe And Its Silence

The Eurasian steppe — the vast grassland that stretches from Hungary in the west to Manchuria in the east, interrupted by mountains and deserts but fundamentally continuous — is the geographical context for understanding the Pazyryk and, through the Pazyryk, the Ice Maiden.

The steppe is not a single environment.

It encompasses forest-steppe in the north, where grassland and trees mix.

It includes dry steppe in the center, where grasses dominate and trees are rare.
