The Global Distribution Of Betel Nut And What It Tells Us

Betel nut use is not uniformly distributed around the world.

It is concentrated in South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of East Africa.

This geographic distribution reflects a combination of factors: the native range of the areca palm, the cultural traditions that developed in areas where the palm was available, and the spread of those traditions through migration and trade.

The areca palm’s native range — or the range of its wild ancestors — is centered in Southeast Asia, particularly in the island arc from Sumatra through the Philippines and into the Pacific.
