The 25,000-Year-Old Teeth That Just Rewrote The History Of Human Drug Use
The second individual — catalogued as CPL-R2a — was excavated from a different site, Leang Cappalombo 1, located approximately 33 kilometers east of Leang Bulu Bettue.
CPL-R2a is a much more complete skeleton than Maros-LBB-1a, which is one of the reasons the dental wear documentation could be done more thoroughly for this individual.
CPL-R2a is dated to approximately 6,300 to 7,600 years ago — the Holocene period, after the Ice Age had ended but before agriculture arrived on the island.
This individual was male.
He was an adult, again estimated to be around 35 years of age.
He was associated with what researchers call the Toalean technocomplex — a distinctive pre-Neolithic foraging culture with deep roots in South Sulawesi, characterized by specific tool types and subsistence patterns that have been documented at multiple sites in the region.
