His ancestors had been Egyptian for as long as anyone in his community could remember.

But further back, beyond the reach of any oral tradition, some of those ancestors had come from the east — from the great river valleys of Mesopotamia, or from populations that had passed through the Levant from further east still.

Those distant ancestors had mixed with the North African population of the Nile Valley, and their descendants had done the same, and over many generations the eastern ancestry had been integrated into what was, by NUE001’s time, simply Egyptian ancestry.

He carried that mixture in every cell of his body.
