The Face Of The Past: Facial Reconstruction

The facial reconstruction of Ötzi — the process of using his skull structure and genetic data to produce a visual representation of what he looked like in life — has been one of the most publicly visible aspects of the scientific investigation, and one of the most revised.

Multiple reconstruction attempts have been produced over the decades since the discovery.

The earliest reconstructions, made when little genetic information was available and based primarily on skeletal analysis, produced a figure that looked broadly like a rugged European — weathered, perhaps, but essentially familiar in appearance.

The 2012 genome provided a genetic basis for refining the reconstruction: the determination that Ötzi had brown eyes, and initial estimates of his skin tone (placed as Mediterranean-European but not as dark as the 2023 analysis would later suggest).
