Colombia’s position at the junction of the two American continents means that whatever happened demographically on the Bogotá Altiplano has implications for our understanding of how people moved between North and South America, how the diversity of South American populations was established, and what routes and mechanisms shaped the human geography of the continent in deep prehistory.

The Checua people were part of that story in a way that was invisible until 2025.

Now they are visible — partially, imperfectly, with important uncertainties remaining.
