The Arrival From The North: Central American Ancestry
By approximately 2,000 years before present, the Altiplano individuals in the study — the nine Herrera-period individuals from the Laguna de la Herrera site — showed a genetic profile dramatically different from the Checua group.
The Herrera-period individuals showed affinities to ancient populations from Panama, and to present-day Chibchan-language-speaking populations from the Isthmus of Panama and adjacent regions of Central and northwestern South America.
The Chibchan language family is one of the most geographically widespread in the region connecting Central America to the northern Andes.
