Whether the Muisca themselves spoke a Chibchan language is a question that historical records confirm: Muysccubun, the language of the Muisca, is classified as a Chibchan language.

Its extinction — Muysccubun ceased to be spoken as a living language in the nineteenth century, replaced by Spanish — has made the documentation of this connection more challenging, but its Chibchan affiliation is well-established.

The genetics thus align with the linguistics: the people who established the Herrera cultural tradition and whose descendants built the Muisca chiefdoms spoke Chibchan languages and carried genetics consistent with an ultimate origin in the Isthmus of Panama / Costa Rica / Panama region.

This does not mean that the Muisca were simply transplanted Panamanians.
