The Altiplano Cundiboyacense As A Geographic Entity

The Bogotá Altiplano — formally the Altiplano Cundiboyacense — is not simply the elevated plateau on which Bogotá sits.

It is a geographic and ecological complex extending through two of Colombia’s highland departments, Cundinamarca and Boyacá, encompassing an area of roughly 25,000 square kilometers of high-altitude terrain within the folds and basins of the Eastern Cordillera.

The basin that contains Bogotá is the most prominent of these highland environments — a broad, relatively flat space at roughly 2,600 meters above sea level, ringed by higher peaks and drained by the Bogotá River.
