Why Twins Are Rare in Archaeological DNA

The identification of monozygotic twins in ancient DNA is rare not only because identical twins are uncommon in the general population but also because of the specific combination of circumstances required for them to be identified.

For twins to be identified as twins from ancient DNA, both members of the pair must be preserved in the archaeological record in a recoverable form.

In most burial contexts, this is unlikely.
