They were members of a community, and the community placed them in the dark water of a familiar pond, and then the pond and its peat held them in the specific and unrepeatable chemistry of that specific place, for eight thousand years, until a backhoe in 1982 turned over a piece of old peat and a man named Steve Vanderjagt found himself looking at eye sockets where he had expected a rock.
What was preserved there was not just bone.
