The Florida Interior Eight Thousand Years Ago — A World Reconstructed

To understand the Windover community in its full context requires some picture of what the Florida interior looked like in the Early to Middle Archaic period — roughly 8,000 years ago.

Sea level was substantially lower than today — estimates range from roughly fifteen to twenty feet below the present shoreline.

The Florida peninsula was consequently larger than it is now: what is today shallow ocean east and west of the state was dry land, and the coastline was considerably farther from the modern interior.
