The most significant archives are hidden in ponds that look like any other pond, in soil that looks like any other soil, in places that become extraordinary only when something opens them up.

Half of it has not been opened since.

What the unexcavated half holds is unknown.

It is preserved by the same conditions that preserved the excavated half: the waterlogging, the peat, the chemistry of this specific pond in this specific part of the Florida interior.

It will hold its contents until some future event — excavation, construction, hydrological change — opens it.

When that happens, whatever happens then will be shaped by questions and tools and ethical frameworks that do not yet exist.
