What Windover proves is that the organic fraction of the material record could be extensive and sophisticated even in communities that left almost no durable material beyond stone.

This should cause systematic skepticism about characterizations of any early period as “simple” based on a lithic record alone.

The simplicity observed in the stone record may be a genuine characteristic of the communities — they may have focused their technological effort on organic materials that have since disappeared.

Or it may be a preservation artifact — a reflection of what survived rather than what existed.

Windover cannot tell us which.
