The science has spent forty years reading it, imperfectly and incrementally, adding to the picture in ways that the people buried there could not have imagined and did not intend.

What the science has found is not brains in skulls.

That is the headline, and it is accurate, but it is not the story.

The story is care.

Community.

The deliberate choice, across multiple generations, to treat the dead — all of them, from newborns to elders, from the fully capable to the permanently disabled — as members of a community deserving of specific and personal acknowledgment in death.

The pond preserved that story, imperfectly and partially, for 8,000 years.

The road was never built.

The pond is still there.

And what it preserved is still teaching.
