The Researchers Who Opened The Window

The archaeological and scientific work done at the Texas sites was carried out by researchers who were, in many cases, working under significant constraints — of time, of funding, of legal complexity, and of the competing claims of multiple stakeholders.

Leland Bement, who conducted the primary analysis of the Bering Sinkhole materials and published the results through the University of Texas Press, produced what became the foundational reference for Archaic-period mortuary practices on the Edwards Plateau.

His multi-disciplinary analysis drew on skeletal biology, faunal analysis, artifact description, radiocarbon dating, and geomorphological context to create a comprehensive picture of the sinkhole and its contents.
