To the north, in what is now the Midwest, similar populations of Early Archaic hunter-gatherers were developing the complex mortuary traditions and exchange networks that would eventually culminate in the elaborate ceremonial systems of the Woodland period.
To the south and west, in the desert Southwest and the Great Basin, other Early Archaic populations were adapting to different environments with different subsistence strategies, but maintaining the same kind of long-distance exchange connections that characterized their Texas contemporaries.
