The Edwards Plateau karst landscape, with its sinkholes and caves and solution cavities, continues to yield archaeological surprises.

New sites are discovered as land is cleared, as erosion exposes buried materials, as researchers conduct systematic surveys of areas that have not previously been studied.

Bering Sinkhole is not alone on the plateau.

Other sinkholes across the region have been found to contain human remains, though most have been less thoroughly investigated.

The pattern appears to be widespread: throughout the Edwards Plateau, natural limestone openings were used as burial places by Archaic-period hunter-gatherers, creating a scattered network of cave and sinkhole cemeteries whose full extent has not yet been determined.
