The man in the cave is the closest thing we have to a window into that lost world.

His bones, his mitochondrial DNA, the torch marks he left behind — these are the traces of a real human life in a real community in a real landscape.

The community itself has not been found.

The landscape has changed around its traces.

The people themselves are long gone.

But they were there.

And the man in the cave, carrying his torch, making his way into the dark, was one of them.

Part of a world that was fully human, fully complex, fully real — and almost entirely beyond our current capacity to recover.
