Cold, dry conditions in caves — which reduce bacterial activity and slow the chemical degradation of DNA — can preserve genetic material for substantial periods.

The constant cold temperature of Hourglass Cave, maintained year-round by the cave’s thermal mass, was favorable for DNA preservation.

Whether enough genetic material had survived approximately 8,800 years in the cave to yield reliable results was a question that only laboratory work could answer.
