The process that followed the rediscovery involved coordination between multiple institutions: the NPS, which had ongoing responsibility for the archaeological context from which the tooth had come; the Danish institutions that held the physical collection; the ancient-DNA laboratories capable of analyzing the specimen; the radiocarbon dating facilities that would establish the tooth’s age; and the dental anthropology researchers who would conduct the morphological analysis.

This kind of institutional coordination is a normal part of major archaeological research projects, but it adds time and complexity to what might superficially seem like straightforward analytical tasks.

Transferring material between countries, coordinating sampling protocols that allow multiple types of analysis from a single small specimen, ensuring that the documentation required by relevant national and international agreements is in order — these logistical dimensions of the research are invisible in the final published results but essential to how the research was conducted.

The decision about how much material to sample from the tooth for destructive analysis — for radiocarbon dating and DNA extraction, which both require physically consuming a portion of the specimen — is among the most consequential choices in the research process.
