The Trail Creek Caves and their archaeological contents fall within the NPS’s area of responsibility, and the institutional collaboration that eventually brought the tooth to the attention of ancient-DNA researchers was a product of that responsibility.

The journey from rediscovery to published scientific results took several years.

The analytical work required coordination across multiple institutions — the NPS, the Danish institutions holding the collections, the ancient-DNA laboratories capable of extracting and analyzing genomic data from a single degraded specimen, and the dental anthropologists whose morphological analysis complemented the genetic and dating work.

The publication of results from the Trail Creek tooth analysis appeared as part of a broader study of early human dispersals within the Americas, published in the journal Science in 2018 — one of the most widely read and rigorously peer-reviewed scientific publications in the world.

The inclusion of the Trail Creek data in this study was a reflection of the tooth’s scientific significance: it was not a local or minor finding, but a contribution to one of the most actively studied questions in the prehistory of the Americas.
