“Yesterday, when you went to get ice cream,” Lily said, clutching her little pink sand pail in both hands, “Daddy and Uncle Jim pulled out the big metal box from under the bed.

And they were counting paper money and putting it into blue bags.”

I kept my voice light, easy, a mother making pleasant conversation.

“Paper money?” I said.

“Like play money, sweetie?
