“Hey, you,” he said, giving me the warm, effortless smile.

“Where’s Lily?

I thought you two were down at the water.”

“Smoothie at the pavilion,” I said, working the lotion into my arms, grateful to have something for my hands to do.

“The attendant’s keeping an eye on her.

I came up to get out of the sun for a bit.”

“Good.” He crossed the room and kissed my cheek.

He smelled of salt and the expensive cologne he’d worn since before I knew him.
