The Accounting
An actual drawer — the bottom drawer of a pine chest I had built for a client in Idaho Springs who never collected it, taken out of the carcass and set on two sawhorses with the sides built up, and if you had walked into my workshop in the August of 2006 you would have seen a seven-week-old baby asleep in a drawer on sawhorses nine feet from a running band saw, and you would have been entitled to say something about it.
Nobody did.
That is Silver Plume.
Harold Beem gave me a pack of diapers across the counter in the second week and would not ring it up and would not discuss it.
Mrs.
Gable at the post office held my mail for three days because she had seen me come in with him at nine in the morning and had decided I looked like a man who should be at home.
And Deloris at the diner — there is a Deloris in every town and ours worked the counter at the Bluebird — fed me for about four months and put it on a tab that she tore up in the November and told me she had lost.
