The Aisle We Walked Together
From am I doing something bad by reminding you about Mom to my family is already complete.
From a child who believed her love was a liability to a child who could stand up in front of her class and name, with total confidence, exactly what a family is and exactly why hers counted.
I did not make that journey for her; no parent can walk that road on a child’s behalf.
But I had, at least, stopped the person who was dragging her the other way, and then I had walked beside her, patiently, for a year, while she found her own way back.
And to sit in that auditorium and hear the destination come out of her own mouth, unprompted and unafraid, was worth more to me than any wedding I could ever have had.
