The Aisle We Walked Together
Instead I found my daughter behind a locked door, and I remembered the promise that actually mattered, the one I had made five years earlier, holding Hannah in my arms in the worst days after Rebecca died, when I swore to her that she would never have to face this world alone as long as I was alive.
On that lawn, I had come within three minutes of breaking that oath by handing our lives to the wrong person.
But my daughter was brave enough to tell me the truth, and I was, just barely, wise enough to listen, before those three minutes could turn into a ruined childhood.
There was no wedding at the resort that afternoon.
But a real family walked out of that place together, hand in hand, and drove home together, stronger than we had ever been.
