Chapter 11 — Why Was My Daughter Locked in a Room

“Why,” I said, keeping my voice level and clear, “was my nine-year-old daughter locked inside a dark service room while you were out here getting your pictures taken?”

Brenda’s eyes flicked, just for an instant, toward the photographer and her two bridesmaids, a quick calculation of who was listening, and then she lowered her voice into a hard, controlled whisper.

“She was not locked in at all, Chris.
