“You are throwing away two entire years of our lives,” Brenda said, her eyes filling with furious tears, “because of a single conversation with a confused nine-year-old.” “I am protecting my daughter,” I answered, “who finally felt safe enough to tell me the truth.”
Brenda’s mother hurried up the steps to try to mediate, saying that everyone was overwhelmed by the stress of a big wedding, that blended families always had a few rough bumps at the start.
