The Aisle We Walked Together
There is a particular clarity that comes from hearing a person, in a moment of rage, accidentally tell you the truth they have hidden for years.
Everything Brenda had said to me over two years had been chosen, calibrated, performed.
But tolerated came out unguarded, in fury, and it was therefore the single most honest word she ever spoke to me, and it explained everything at once.
It explained the kindness that had always felt, in some way I could never name, slightly rehearsed.
It explained why her patience with Hannah had a limit I could sometimes sense but never see.
It explained the two years entirely, because it revealed that there had never been love in them at all, only endurance, a long patient waiting-out of a widower and his daughter until the transaction could be completed and the merchandise, my household, my daughter’s place in it, could be repossessed and rearranged.
