It does not mean you were supposed to be psychic.

It does not mean you’re accountable for what someone deliberately hid from you and coached a child to keep hidden.

There is a difference between a failure of attention and a failure of character, and I need you clear on which this was.

A man who is told the truth and looks away, who has the facts and does nothing, that is a failure of character, and I would have no use for him.

A man who was actively deceived, by someone skilled at it, fed a false picture and cut off from the one witness who knew, and who then, the instant the truth broke through, moved without hesitation to protect the child, that man did not fail his daughter.
