The maternal chromosomes — those inherited from her Neanderthal mother — were consistent with Neanderthal genomic patterns, including specific variants previously identified in Neanderthal genomes from sites in Europe and western Asia.

The paternal chromosomes — those inherited from her Denisovan father — were consistent with Denisovan genomic patterns.

The analysis also showed something interesting about the specific Neanderthal and Denisovan populations that Denny’s parents came from.

Her mother’s Neanderthal genetics were more similar to Neanderthal populations from Western Europe than to the Neanderthal population that had also inhabited Denisova Cave (and which was represented by other Denisovan Cave specimens).

This suggested that her Neanderthal mother had migrated to the Altai region from elsewhere — from a western Neanderthal population that had traveled east, perhaps over many generations, to arrive in the territory that the Denisovans occupied.
