The team called them Denisovans, after the cave where the bone was found.
The Denisovans were a previously unknown group — a distinct lineage of ancient humans that had apparently lived in Asia for hundreds of thousands of years, parallel to but separate from the Neanderthals who occupied Europe and western Asia.
The discovery was made from a single finger bone and a single molar.
