The tension between preservation for science and return for communities is not fully resolved by any single case.

But something else is also true, and it deserves to be said plainly.

The science that was conducted on Kennewick Man in the years between 1996 and 2015 produced findings that changed our understanding of North American prehistory.

The ancient DNA analysis in particular was a landmark achievement — one of the most significant contributions to the study of ancient American populations that has been made in modern times.

And that finding — the finding that most definitively answered the questions raised by Kennewick Man’s discovery — supported what the tribes had said from the beginning.

He was their ancestor.

The science, in the end, confirmed the oral tradition.
