The Nineteenth Century Encounters — And What They Revealed About Attitudes

When European Americans entered Mammoth Cave in any systematic way in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, they encountered two distinct kinds of evidence of what the cave had held before them: the geological formations that made the cave commercially interesting, and the archaeological evidence of Indigenous people that made the cave historically interesting.
