They represent a textile tradition that, beyond the cave, left relatively little evidence: most woven plant fiber objects from this period have decomposed outside, but inside the cave, preserved by the dry air, they survive as evidence of craft knowledge that the archaeological record elsewhere has largely erased.

The gourd bowls that appear in cave passages — some of them still positioned near mineral-bearing walls, as though set down mid-task and never retrieved — are another indicator of material culture.
